It was amazing to observe the good growth of medicinal herb Kevatch in drier parts of Indian State Rajasthan. According to my advice the farmers have planted Mucuna seeds in the periphery of the farms. As Mucuna is a climber the fence with barbed wire supported it effectively. From distance the farms are looking nice with green boundary. As it is not consumed by the cattle it is good way of utilizing the fence. And finally it is a medicinal herb having fair demand at national as well as international market. The lesson form the farmers of Chhattisgarh are now benefiting the farmers of Rajasthan. It is good sign.

The Rajasthan farmers have planted both white seeded and black seeded Mucuna. Black seeded Mucuna is having higher demand. But due to the irritating hairs present on pods the farmers hesitate to cultivate it. In fact these hairs protect the boundaries in more effective way from both the humanbeings as well as cattle and no one is having dare to cross the live fence of Mucuna. In term of quality Black seeded Mucuna is considered superior but from production point of view white seeded Mucuna is good. I have informed the farmers about various formulations beneficial for both humanbeings and farm cattle. They are using its different parts in their farms and saving the medical expenses. Although they are informed about the market potential but at present they are unable to fulfill on farm requirement. The sell in markets is their second priority.

While suggesting any medicinal herb to the farmers I always give emphasis on the utility of it at farm level as well as about its market. Growing herbs for themselves motivates the farmers more to start the cultivation of new crop. One of my farmers from MadhyPradesh is growing Aloe for his family. He is having the information about hundreds of Aloe based formulations. Two-acre crop is not enough for him to satisfy the family requirement. He is not afraid of market. He is saving much medical expenses by using Aloe as medicine. Now he is planning to popularize its use among the neighbors.

Mucuna is under cultivation as green manure crop in many parts of the world. The Indian farmers have started understanding the importance of this crop for green manuring. The farmers of Rajasthan are observing practically the enrichment of soil by Mucuna plants. In Chhattisgarh the farmers use the soil collected from Mucuna fields in order to make the new fields full of natural nutrients.

Chhattisgarh was among the pioneer states from where Mucuna cultivation has started. At initial phases the farmers earned much by selling its seeds to new farmers. Now the planting material business is over and only real farmers are raising this crop. They are raising it for the end users. There is constant demand of Mucuna. It is very easy to cultivate. Fences as well as old trees are used for this climber. Without support it gives poor yield. Many insects and diseases infest this crop but these are easily managed through the cow urine and dung based formulations. It is good sign that the farmers are growing it organically.

Through the Ethnobotanical surveys conducted in different parts of Chhattisgarh I have found over 20 new species of Mucuna having no description in standard literatures. I am motivating the new farmers to try these new species. As we have no scientific data regarding its phytochemical constituents the buyers are hesitating to purchase it but there are many buyers that are eager to search its potential market.

For the sincere farmers needing regular returns I have found Mucuna a promising crop. This is the reason I am in search of its new uses and farming techniques continuously.

During visits to different parts of India I regularly meet the patients having Parkinson's disease. Most of them are taking L-DOPA based formulations but they are not very satisfied with its performance. I have mentioned in previous articles that the traditional healers of Chhattisgarh manage this trouble with the help of Mucuna based traditional formulations. You will be surprised to know that these formulations are working in more promising way than the modern formulations having Mucuna extract. Even sweet dish prepared from Mucuna seeds is giving good results. These encouraging results can be a lesson for modern researchers to focus on Mucuna based traditional dishes for the Parkinson's disease.

Last month I gave three days lecture on one topic and that was Mucuna. Three days were not enough for me. You can imagine the quantum of information available on Mucuna. It is still less known crop among the common people but I see it as potential crop for coming future.
