क्या यह संभव है कि वनस्पति विशेष के उपयोग के बाद मधुमेह रोगी जितनी भी मात्रा में मीठा खाए उन पर कोई बुरा प्रभाव न पड़े? यदि छत्तीसगढ़ की पारंपरिक चिकित्सा के दृष्टिकोण से देखा जाये तो यह संभव है| राज्य में किये गए वानस्पतिक सर्वेक्षण से यह खुलासा हुआ है|

राज्य में औषधीय वनस्पतियों से सम्बन्षित पारंपरिक चिकित्सकीय ज्ञान का दस्तावेजीकरण कर रहे वनौषधि विशेषज्ञ पंकज अवधिया ने नवभारत के माध्यम से यह बताया कि राज्य में अब तक १७ प्रकार की ऐसी औषधीय वनस्पतियों की पहचान हो चुकी है जो मधुमेह विशेषकर टाइप टू डायबीटीज के रोगियों के लिए वरदान सिद्ध हो सकती हैं| पारम्परिक चिकित्सा में इन वनस्पतियों का प्रयोग तब किया जाता है जब मधुमेह से प्रभावित व्यक्ति को ऐसे किसी समारोह या उत्सवों में शामिल होना होता है जहां खाने-पीने पर अंकुश लगाना मुश्किल होता है| काढ़े की एक खुराक तीन दिनों तक शक्कर के दुष्प्रभाव से बचाकर रखती है| काढ़े के दूसरे लाभ भी है| इसका प्रयोग शरीर की प्रतिरोधक क्षमता को बढाता है| औषधीय धान भेजरी, मुन्दरिया और लाहा गोंदीकुट के साथ इन वनस्पतियों का प्रयोग हृदय रोग से प्रभावित मधुमेह रोगियों की चिकित्सा में किया जाता है|

यूं तो ये वनस्पतियाँ छत्तीसगढ़ के सभी भागों में मिलती हैं पर मैदानी भागों से एकत्रित की गयी वनस्पतियाँ औषधीय गुणों से परिपूर्ण मानी जाती है| इन सत्रह में से बारह वनस्पतियाँ वर्ष के अलग-अलग महीनो में मिलती है और पारम्परिक चिकित्सक महीने विशेष में ही इसके सेवन के पक्षधर हैं| इनमे से दो ऐसी वनस्पतियाँ है जो साल भर मिलती हैं जबकि शेष वनस्पतियाँ दो साल में एक बार मिलती है| संग्रहित वनस्पतियों की बजाय ताजी वनस्पतियों से काढ़ा तैयार करने को पारम्परिक चिकित्सक प्राथमिकता देते हैं| स्थानीय भाषा में इन वनस्पतियों को अलग-अलग नामों से जाना जाता है| ढेप्ली, दुमोकिया, तींकोनिया, मछेरेनी, कुस्निया,दोंगरिन आदि इनके स्थानीय नाम है| दुनिया भर के सन्दर्भ साहित्यों में ऐसी आश्चर्यजनक गुणों वाली वनस्पतियों का उल्लेख नहीं मिलता है| उड़ीसा और मध्यप्रदेश में ये वनस्पतियाँ पायी जाती है पर इनके इस तरह के उपयोगों की जानकारी वहां उपलब्ध नहीं है| इन वनस्पतियों को एकत्र करने के एक सप्ताह पहले तक राज्य के पारम्परिक चिकित्सक इन्हें औषधीय सत्वो से सिंचित करते हैं ताकि ये उपयोग के लिए तैयार हो सकें|

पारंपरिक चिकित्सा में इन वनस्पतियों के नियमित प्रयोग की सलाह नहीं दी जाती है पर मधुमेह पर वैज्ञानिक रपट तैयार कर रहे पंकज अवधिया का मानना है कि इन वनस्पतियों को दूसरी ऐसी वनस्पतियों के साथ मिलाकर नियमित रूप से प्रयोग किया जा सकता है जो इनके हानिकारक प्रभाव को समाप्त कर सकती हैं| उन्होंने अपनी रपट में इस विषय में विस्तार से लिखा है| इस रपट के एक करोड़ से अधिक पन्ने अब इंटरनेट पर उपलब्ध हैं|

किडनी को नुक्सान पहुंचाने वाले शक्कर के आधुनिक विकल्पों से ऐसी वनस्पतियाँ सदा के लिए मुक्ति दिलवा सकती हैं| उन्होंने राज्य के युवा शोधकर्ताओं से ऐसी वनस्पतियों पर शोध करने का अनुरोध किया है|
