Traditional medicinal knowledge about Tea Mosquito Bug Helopeltis antonii Sign. feeding on Jam (Psidium guajava) fruits in Chhattisgarh, India. Updated Version.

Pankaj Oudhia

Introduction
Entomophagy and Entomotherapy are well known in Asia since generations. Unfortunately not much work has been done to document valuable Traditional Medicinal Knowledge about Insects. Pankaj Oudhia is documenting this knowledge since year 1990. The present note “Traditional medicinal knowledge about Tea Mosquito Bug Helopeltis antonii Sign. feeding on Jam (Psidium guajava) fruits in Chhattisgarh, India.”  is updated version of his previously published online research document available through pankajoudhia.com.
Keywords: Entomophagy; Entomotherapy; Medicinal Insects; Ayurveda; Chhattisgarh;

Jam (Guava) is well known fruit crop in Chhattisgarh. Many varieties of Guava are under cultivation in Chhattisgarh. I have mentioned in previous articles that the natives and traditional healers of the state are not only aware of medicinal properties and uses of Guava plant parts but also they use the insects feeding on it, as medicinal insect. Tea Mosquito Bug Helopeltis anatonii (Miridae: Hemiptera) is one of the problematic pests of Guava plant. It damages the Fruits. During the Ethno-entomological surveys conducted in different parts of Chhattisgarh, I have observed that the traditional healers of Nagri-Sihawa and Gariaband regions of Chhattisgarh use Tea Mosquito Bug feeding on Guava fruits as medicine. The full fed bugs are collected in bulk and after shade drying use it in very small amount as medicine. The dry bugs are added in many herbal formulations. I have listed out nine such formulations in which these bugs are added as main ingredients. These formulations are used mainly in treatment of liver related troubles. The traditional healers informed that by nature, Tea Mosquito bugs are hot and possess some toxic contents that are unfit for human body in bulk amount. In treatment of Jaundice, many healers give the dry bugs in combination with Bhuiaonla (Phyllanthus amarus). Bhuiaonla is well known herb for Jaundice. The healers claim that Bhuionla possess some properties that nullifies the harmful effects of Tea Mosquito bug. According to the healers, they are using this bug as medicine since generations as traditional knowledge. I have noted during the survey that many herb vendors sell the dry bug collected from Guava rich regions, to the traditional healers. The healers of Chhattisgarh are not aware of any other uses of this bug.

The traditional medicinal uses of Tea Mosquito Bug feeding on Guava fruits have not been reported in reference literatures. I am thankful to the Mother Nature, for giving me opportunity to document this important traditional knowledge.
New Comments added on May, 2014
Through recent surveys I have collected additional information about medicinal uses of Helopeltis. It is added in over 7000 Formulations used for different liver related diseases. In Mukia based Formulations it is added as nonary ingredient. These Formulations are used at early stage of liver diseases. In Ponerorchis based Formulations it is added as senary ingredient. These Formulations are used for complicated cases of liver infection. In treatment of Jaundice the Traditional Healers of Bastar use Habenaria and Vanda based Formulations. In these Formulations Helopeltis is added as quaternary ingredient. It is added as secret ingredient and the Healers rarely share any information about it even with the close Chelas. In Gymnadenia based Formulations it is added as quinary ingredient along with Curculigo and Tacca. In Andrographis based Formulations for old cases of liver diseases the Healers add it as septenary ingredient. In Cassia based Formulations it is added as denary ingredient. In Nervilia based Formulations for Hepatitis it is added as tertiary ingredient. In Meiogyne based Formulations it is added as secondary and nonary ingredient based on the viability of the patients.
In Ixora based Formulations for Miliusa Toxicity Helopeltis is added as quianry ingredient. In Terminalia based Formulations for Fimbristylis Toxicity it is added as quaternary ingredient. In Acorus based Formulations for Boerhavia Overdose it is added as senary ingredient. In Elaeocarpus based Formulations for Entada Toxicity it is added as denary ingredient.
