Traditional medicinal knowledge about White Fly Aleuroclava hiptae feeding on Madhavilata [Hiptage benghalensis (L.) Kurz] in Chhattisgarh, India. Updated Version.

Pankaj Oudhia

Introduction

Entomophagy and Entomotherapy are well known in Asia since generations. Unfortunately not much work has been done to document valuable Traditional Medicinal Knowledge about Insects. Pankaj Oudhia is documenting this knowledge since year 1990. The present note “Traditional medicinal knowledge about White Fly Aleuroclava hiptae feeding on Madhavilata [Hiptage benghalensis (L.) Kurz] in Chhattisgarh, India.”  is updated version of his previously published online research document available through pankajoudhia.com.

Keywords: Entomophagy; Entomotherapy; Medicinal Insects; Ayurveda; Chhattisgarh;

Madhavilata (Hiptage benghalensis syn. H. madablota; Banisteria benghalensis) is an evergreen climbing shrub, native to India and Malaysia. It is grown in gardens for its white and yellow fragrant flowers. Among the traditional healers of Chhattisgarh, Madhavilata is known for its valuable medicinal properties and uses. Its all parts are used as medicine. The natural forests of Chhattisgarh are rich in Madhavilata. It is also planted as ornamental herb in home gardens. The infestation of white Fly is common in Chhattisgarh. During the Ethno-entomological conducted in different parts of Chhattisgarh in recent past, I have observed that many senior natives and traditional healers of Chhattisgarh Plains use the full fed nymphs and adults collected from Madhavilata as medicine. The full fed nymphs and adults are used in treatment of skin related troubles through different ways. Its uses in form of ointment and special oil are most common. Many medicinal herbs are also added in ointment and special oil in order to make it more promising. These ointments and special oil are used externally. In general, the senior natives and traditional healers use it in treatment of infectious skin troubles common in rainy season. The special oil is also applied on infection between the fingers common among farm workers working in submerged paddy fields. The patients having the problem of Daad (Ringworm) are advised by the healers to use the decoction of White fly nymphs and adults during bath. Many healers recommend its internal use in form of dry powder, in treatment of liver related troubles, but as other promising alternatives are available, it is used very rarely. From documentation point of view, it is important information. The natives are traditional healers of other parts of Chhattisgarh are not aware of these medicinal uses. The traditional healers of Chhattisgarh Plains do not adopt any special method or precautions during the collection of insects.

In reference literatures, Aleuroclava hiptae feeding on Hiptage benghalensis is not described as medicinal insect. The present research article is the first written document on this important aspect.
New Comments added on May, 2014
Through recent surveys I have collected information about over 3500 Formulations in which Aleuroclava hiptae is added as important ingredient. These Formulations are used for Kidney diseases. In Chlorophytum based Formulations it is added as secondary ingredient. In Curculigo and Berberis based Formulations it is added as tertiary ingredient. The Traditional Healers use it in Formulations after purification. Aleuroclava hiptae is dipped in cow urine at first and then cow milk and at last in herbal solution. In general the information about this purification process is kept secret. In Lawsonia based Formulations it is added as quaternary ingredient along with Curcuma caesia. In Aloe based Formulations it is added with Entada and Typha as senary ingredient. In Dioscorea based Formulations it is added with MedicinalOrchids and Ventilago as quinary ingredient. In treatment of Chronic Kidney Failure the Traditional Healers use Phyllodium based Formulations. In these Formulations Aleuroclava hiptae is added with Grewia and Woodfordia as septenary ingredient. In Buchanania based Formulations for the same disease the Healers of Gandhamardan Hills use Strychnos potatorum and Aleuroclava hiptae as octonary ingredient. In Phyllanthus based Formulations it is added as nonary and denary ingredient. For information on complete Formulations and dosage please visit pankajoudhia.com
