Introduction

Entomophagy and Entomotherapy are well known in Asia since generations. Unfortunately not much work has been done to document valuable Traditional Medicinal Knowledge about Insects. Pankaj Oudhia is documenting this knowledge since year 1990. The present note “Traditional medicinal knowledge about Mealy bug Pseudococcus crotonis Gr. feeding on Anar (Punica granatum) in Chhattisgarh, India.”  is updated version of his previously published online research document available through pankajoudhia.com.

Anar is well known fruit tree in Chhattisgarh. According to the reference literatures, it is a shrub or small tree, native to Iran. Its bark and fruit shells are used for tanning. Anar holds a reputed position as medicinal herb in reference literatures related to different systems of medicine, in India. Its all parts are used as medicine. The natives and traditional healers of Chhattisgarh have rich traditional medicinal knowledge about this herb. The Mealy bug Pseudococcuss crotonis occurs in large numbers covering the fruits and its stalks. During the Ethno-entomological surveys conducted in different parts of Chhattisgarh, I have noted that the traditional healers use this Mealy bug as medicinal insect. Alone or in combination with medicinal herbs, the bugs are added in popular combinations used to flush out the intestinal worms. In Chhattisgarh, Baibirang (Embelia ribes) is used as promising medicinal herb in treatment of Intestinal worms. The traditional healers of Keshkal region informed that Baibirang possess some harmful properties. This is the reason it is always given with other herbs in order to nullify the harmful effect. According to them, the Mealy bug feeding on Anar fruits possess this great property. The bugs are used alone rarely. The full fed bugs are collected and after shade drying converted into powder. This powder is used as medicine. The healers are not in favour of its long term storage. As this insect infests the Anar fruits commonly, the healers get the bugs easily. The traditional healers of Gandai-Salewara informed that in early days the bugs were in use in treatment of dysentery and diarrhea, but this use is not popular these days. The healers have no reason for it. They are not much aware of other medicinal uses of this Mealy bug.

In reference literatures, Pseudococcuss crotonis is not mentioned as medicinal insect. Through the on-going Ethno-entomological surveys in different parts of Chhattisgarh, I am trying my best to gather more information on this important insect.

Through recent surveys I have collected information about over 5000 Formulations in which Pseudococcuss crotonis is added as important ingredient. These Formulations are used in treatment of different diseases both internally as well as externally. In Dillenia based Formulations it is added as quinary ingredient. These Formulations are used for treatment of liver diseases. In Sida based Formulations it is added as quinary and secondary ingredient. These Formulations are used in treatment of old wounds. In Astercantha based Formulations of Bastar it is added as quinary ingredient with Achyranthes. In Trombidium based Formulations of Gandhamardan Hills it is added as quinary ingredient with Cynodon. In Shorea based Formulations of Jharkhand it is added as quinary ingredient with Vanda and other Medicinal Orchids. In Polyalthia based Formulations it is added as quaternary ingredient. These Formulations are used in treatment of old cases of Malaria. In Cordia and Grewia based Formulations it is added as senary ingredient.These Formulations are used in treatment of Heart Diseases. In Emilia based Formulations it is added as septenary ingredient. These Formulations are used for treatment of internal bleeding. In Eclipta and Echinops based Formulations it is added as octonary ingredient. These Formulations are used in treatment of urinary diseases.
