The traditional healers of Northern Chhattisgarh specially the healers living in the regions near to neighboring state Jharkhand use three species of herbs very commonly for different types of cancer. Although the traditional healers claim that all these herbs are present in wild but I have yet not seen it in natural forest. I have seen it with the herb vendors coming from the neighboring state. Different healers use these herbs differently. Through the interactions and meetings with these healers I have collected many interesting information. The traditional healers of this region use a special decoction to wash the cancerous wounds. They prepare this decoction very secretly. They prepare it by themselves and apply it under their supervision. After regular visits to the healers I got information about this herb. I identified it as Glossogyne pinnatifida. Many herb vendors sell it in the name of Kamraj. The healers informed that whole herb is used to prepare the decoction. The lukewarm decoction is used to wash the wounds. Many times the patients are suggested to apply the paste prepared from whole herb on wounds and tie it with the help of Pipal (Ficus religiosa) leaves. The healers have deep faith in this use. They have acquired this knowledge from their ancestors and practicing it sincerely without any modification. The healers use different plant parts of medicinal tree Doomar (Ficus glomerata) to prepare different extracts. These extracts are used to make this herb rich in medicinal properties. In general the healers irrigate this herb with these extracts three days before the collection of whole herb. The healers always use the fresh herb. From the herb vendors of other states the traditional healers of far north purchase a special herb for the treatment of cancer. This herb is used in combination with other local herbs. The combination is applied externally on cancerous wounds. I have identified it as Ethulia conyzoides. The healers use it at advanced stages as last hope when all remedies fail to give the desirable effects. This herb is not used alone. I am in process of gathering more information about this herb. Last year when I visited the traditional healers of this region with the patients having throat cancer at advanced stage I observed the use of specific herb for treatment. The traditional healers use the leaves of specific herb internally along with routine treatment. According to the healers these leaves are having the capacity to stop the spread of cancer. It also manages the problem. Many healers use it in combination with other herbs. The healers informed that they collect it from wild and use it as traditional medicine. I have identified this herb as Emilia sonchifolia. It is described as weed in standard literatures. The traditional healers use the extracts prepared from bark of certain trees in order to enrich the plants with medicinal properties. The healers collect the leaves on specific time and store it carefully for round the year use. The use of these valuable herbs in treatment of cancer was new information for me. I am sharing this information with other traditional healers. I have yet not found much literature describing the uses of these herbs in treatment of cancer. I am sure that this information will be of great importance for the cancer researchers around the world. |
