Today is July 25,2005 I am getting regular calls from the Safed Musli growers. They have many new problems. The banks were encouraging the new farmers to start cultivation of Safed Musli by taking loan from them till last year but now they have closed their door and giving no loan to the farmers. Due to this move of banks the new farmers are not getting finance to purchase Musli planting material. Also the old farmers are facing great problem as their produce has been blocked. It is very serious trouble all over the India especially in central India from where Musli cultivation has started.

Safed Musli (Chlorophytum borivilianum) was promoted as golden crop in last decade. Instead of selling the dry Musli of commercial importance most of the farmers showed interest in selling the planting material to the new farmers. Initially through planting material business the farmers earned lot but now in most part of the country the level of saturation is coming. The rates of planting material have been down. The new farmers are in dilemma. Best time for the sowing of Safed Musli is over but the farmers are still hoping to get the buyers for the planting material. Rich farmers have managed to sell the material to the newer state where Safed Musli is new crop for the farmers. They invested much in organizing seminars as well as on advertisements. For the first time we have observed the gift of motorbike and mobile set with the planting material of large acres. The planting material suppliers want to sell the material anyhow and now at any rate.

In last few months I visited different parts of country and met over hundred of Safed Musli growers. Most of the growers are much worried about the future of this wonder crop. When I questioned that why they are not going for the processing of Musli as there is constant market of this produce. Many of them replied that they are not much sound technically and not aware of proper processing methods. Safed Musli peeling is not a tough job. Many replied that they are much interested in planting material business. Their wait for the buyer seems endless. Due to saturation the dry Musli buyers at national market have lowered the rates. They want to take the advantage of this saturation. The farmers are in trouble from all sides. Surprisingly the authorities are not coming forward to help the farmers. Their presence can help the farmers to get fair price of Safed Musli.

So in absence of buyers what the Safed Musli growers are planning? Most of the farmers have replanted Musli with hope that next year they will get good market. Any assurance or guarantee? No it's only hope. Many farmers have started the processing of tubers. They want to try for market. Few of them are in research phase and trying to develop Safed Musli based food products. One of my friends has started work on developing Cattle feed using Safed Musli tubers. There are hundreds of small and medium farmers having no investment capacity to uproot and replant the crop. They have left the field as such. Their conditions are most serious.

It is shocking that National Medicinal Plant Board is not coming forward to help these farmers. Safed Musli is present in the list of potential crops the board is promoting. It has given crores of rupees for the cultivation of this wonder crop. Now it is board's moral responsibility to guide the farmers in sell of the produce.

In most states the condition as well as future of Safed Musli are in danger but in North India as well as in North-Eastern states the farmers far from modern communication systems and latest news about Safed Musli failure, are eager to purchase this crop like the farmers of Central India few years before. It is very necessary to warn such farmers to take any step with full precaution.

Associated with this wonder crop since long time I have seen its different phases .I am writing regularly on its different aspects with hope that my articles will aware the new farmers about the facts. You will find more articles on this aspect in future. Keep reading.
