Bar is a tree of religious and medicinal importance. It is common tree in Indian state Chhattisgarh. Many villages in the state are named on the basis of rich population of this tree like Bargaon,Bardih etc. The natives and traditional healers of Chhttisgarh have rich traditional medicinal knowledge about this tree. It holds a reputed position in different systems of medicine in India. According to Ayurveda, it is astringent to bowels; useful in treatment of biliousness, ulcers, erysipelas, vomiting, vaginal complains, fever, inflammations, leprosy. According to Unani system of medicine, its latex is aphrodisiac, tonic, vulernary, maturant, lessens inflammations; useful in piles, nose-diseases, gonorrhea etc. The aerial root is styptic, useful in syphilis, biliousness, dysentery, inflammation of liver etc.
