Although the Chhattisgarh Plains are having rich population of Bambri trees and it grows with rice system but the natives and traditional healers of all parts of Chhattisgarh are having rich traditional medicinal knowledge about this tree. Its all parts are used as medicine. The natives start their day by using Bambri twigs as Dataun. Bambri wood is used for making all types of agricultural implements. The natives collect its gum and sell it to the herb traders. In this way they earn much from this tree. The traditional healers of Chhattisgarh having expertise in treatment of different types of cancer use Bambri plant parts as medicine. Although it is used less commonly but many healers consider it very promising. Through interactions and meetings with these healers I have collected many interesting information on this aspect. The traditional healers use Bambri commonly in treatment of mouth cancer. The healers of different regions use it in different ways. Its bark is used for this purpose. From the traditional healers of Chhattisgarh Plains I got information on bark based formulation. The healers mix the stem and root barks in equal proportion and boil it in water. The decoction is prepared and patients are advised to gargle with this decoction. The healers are in favor of its long-term use. The healers add more herbs in it in order to get more promising result. The traditional healers of Gandai-Salewara region use the bark in combination with Ama (Mangifera indica). Jam (Psidium guajava), Chiraijam (Syzygium cumini) and Kathal (Jackfruit) barks. Bambri bark is added as main ingredient. All barks are collected and after shade drying converted into powder. The powder is used to prepare the decoction. The healers use this decoction as supplement treatment along with main treatment of mouth cancer. The healers take inner bark. Old trees are preferred for the collection of bark. The trees infested with bark eating caterpillars are not considered good for the collection. The trees growing in stressed conditions are preferred. While collecting bark the traditional healers take special care. They are aware that unscientific collection may result in the death of the trees. During summer season the traditional healers never miss the chance to collect the fallen pods of Bambri. They use the seeds in treatment of cancerous wounds. Many time's immature seeds are also used. In general they use the seeds in powder form. The powder is applied directly on cancerous wounds. At advanced stages the healers boil the seeds in water and prepare decoction. This decoction is used to wash the wounds. Most of the healers are not in favor of using the decoction. They informed that the decoction could cause new trouble if applied on unaffected parts. In treatment of bone cancer the healers of Rengakhar region use the seeds internally. The patients are advised to take the seeds internally in combination with Shahad (Honey). The combination is given as supplement treatment along with main treatment of bone cancer. The healers claimed that this combination is having the capacity to stop the spread of cancer. They have acquired this knowledge from their ancestors and practicing it sincerely without any modification. They have deep faith in this use. In general the traditional healers suggest all the patients having any type of cancer to take the leaf juice of Bambri daily. The juice of new leaves is preferred. The healers informed that this use helps the patients in better way to fight with the cancer. They are not aware of its mode of action. I have observed its use many times. In order to prevent the cancer the natives prone to cancer are suggested by the traditional healers to consume the sprouts of Bambri without any gap. The healers also use it in treatment of cancer patients. New comments added on April 01, 2007 Through recent surveys I have collected information on over 200 formulations in which Bambri roots are added as important ingredient. These formulations are used in treatment of cancer specially at advanced stages. I am giving list of these formulations in next section of this article. In general Bambri roots are used less commonly as medicine but its use in treatment of cancer is new as well as surprising for me. The healers treat the trees with specific herbal extracts and leachates before the collection of plant parts. The purpose of treatment is to enrich the plant parts with medicinal properties. The also use it to activate the medicinal contents. I have written much about this Traditional Allelopathic Knowledge in my previous articles. In general the healers use the extracts and leachates of common weeds of surroundings. They also worship the trees and utter mantras while collection of plant parts. Many exotic species of Acacia have been introduced in Chhattisgarh in recent past. The traditional healers are not using these species for trouble like cancer. I am in process of getting more information on this aspect. You will find the details in coming articles. |
