This is really surprising information that the herb collectors of Chhattisgarh have traditional medicinal knowledge about some unique uses of common herbs having promising effects in case of Urine retention. Through the ethnobotanical surveys conducted among them, I got details regarding these traditional uses. I am giving the details in present article.
The herb collectors of Chhattisgarh plains engaged in collection of Bambri Gond (Acacia nilotica gum) informed me about the use of Bambri Chhal (Bark) in treatment of Urine retention. The bark is used externally. The bark is collected and by crushing converted into fine powder. In this fine powder, the fresh latex of Fudhar is mixed and aqueous paste is prepared. This paste is applied externally in Pedu (Pelvic region) as treatment. The herb collectors have faith in this combination and according to them, they are using it since generations. Both Bambri (Babool) and Fudhar (Calotropis gigantea) are commonly available herbs. Hence, it is not wrong to declare it as poor man's formulation. The herb collectors also informed about the use of Sitaphal herb in treatment. Its roots are used internally. The fresh root is rubbed in stone and paste is mixed in water. The patients are advised to take this solution internally as treatment. The treatment is continued till complete cure. Sitaphal (Annona squamosa) is popular among the natives for its delicious and nutritious fruits.
The herb collectors of Narharpur region are aware of use of Bamboo in treatment of Urine retention. The green leaves of Bamboo are allowed to dry and after burning the ash is collected. The ash is mixed with rice water and sugar. This solution is given to the patients internally as treatment. The herb collectors of this region are also aware of the use of Adusa (Adhatoda vasica) herb in treatment. The decoction is prepared by boiling the herb in water. This decoction is given internally as treatment. Adusa is one of common medicinal herbs having heavy demand in national and international drug markets. Chhattisgarh fulfill the demand of these markets to great extent. In this process, the herb collectors of Chhattisgarh play an important role.
The herb collectors of Rajnandgaon region are aware of use of Chandan powder (Santalum indicum) like the Bamboo ash in treatment. The powder is mixed with rice water and sugar and given internally as treatment. The herb collectors also use the seeds of well known timber yielding tree Sagon (Tectona grandis) in treatment. The seeds in form of aqueous paste are applied in Pedu (Pelvic region). With this external use, the herb collectors suggest the patients to take the decoction prepared by boiling the inner bark of medicinal tree Koha (Terminalia arjuna).
The
traditional healers of Chhattisgarh are not aware of many of the above
mentioned formulations. This is reason, I give equal respect to herb collectors
as the natives and healers and I am aware that without the interactions with
them any ethnobotanical survey is incomplete.
